Early Morning Treat
THURSDAY APRIL 22, 2010 - Our morning began with our usual hot, fresh cup of coffee, but today we had a treat. Thunderbolt marina delivers a half/dozen fresh Krispy Creme doughnuts and a USA Today newspaper to each slip. What a nice way to begin our day, (weren't we just discussing going back on our diets??)! Bud and Elaine untied us from the dock and told us we'd see them down the waterway. Shortly around 9 o'clock we spotted Aloha Friday docked at a slip. We noticed Ted standing on the dock so we went over to say good morning. This was at Daufuskie Island. Ted reccomended spending a few hours to explore this unique island, so we did. He gave us the phone number of one of the locals that rent golf carts. She provides a map with it, and its up to us to explore. We thought it was a great idea!! We said good-bye to Ted & Nancy as they went onto their next destination. Well Ahem, let me say the true New Yorker came out of the Captain. He donned his cap and sunglasses and sped off like there was no tomorrow! There are no or very little vehicles on this island, so there was no road traffic to worry about. However some of the roads are dirt roads and eating dust became a whole new meaning!
For the next few hours we had an absolute blast. We learned about the history of Gullah or GeeChee natives and Pat Conroy. The island has such contrasts of three private communities, two communities which have not survived the economic crisis. One is a golfing resort that has clearly gone bankrupt. There are approximately 170 habitants on the island. Some homes are makeshift trailers or tin shacks. The beach on Daufuskie is absolutely beautiful, this is where Elle found her first starfish and sand dollar!!! Lunch time we stopped at Marshside Mama's which is an interesting restaurant with very good food. This made us wonder how they could serve lunches at such an affordable prices because they can't just shop at the local warehouse, there isn't one!
Shortly after lunch we turned our golf cart in and untied from the dock. Todays destination was Port Royal Marina , SC. Dick had won a free nights dockage from the rendezvous. This marina has a loaner car so we planned on stocking the boat which was greatly needed. As we were travelling down the Port Royal Sound we heard a familiar voice beckoning us, it was Ted on Aloha Friday! We thanked him for the great recommendation. As soon as we tied up the Summer Wind we were greeted by Miffi and she had the keys for the loaner vehicle. She asked if we needed to go grocery shopping and we said absolutely! So off we all went together. Back aboard the boat after shopping we made a quick meal for dinner and literally crashed for the night!! We were exhausted,, but what a great day!!!For the next few hours we had an absolute blast. We learned about the history of Gullah or GeeChee natives and Pat Conroy.
