Dick with the caring and talented team of Farenheit Therapy
It has been a few months since our last posting and a lot has changed since that time. To catch some of you up,we made it safely back up to New York by the end of May. That is where our hope to continue on the Loop had to be postponed until possibly next year. Dick's shoulder had been progressively getting worse and upon an examination from his orthopedic doctor confirmed it was time to have rotator cuff surgery, it was indeed torn. His surgery had taken place in July, which was then to be followed by several weeks of physical therapy. His arm was kept in a sling for six weeks, which meant no lifting, limited movement and absolutely no cruising.
One afternoon on one of our outtings to my favorite grocery store Fairway Market, Dick spotted a gym with a connecting physical therapists office and decided to go in and talk to one of the therapists/co-owner Kathy. After their conversation, he came away extremely impressed and decided that he found the place to heal!! On his first official visit, he met the other therapist/co-owner Lily. It was an interesting experience because after his first session, Dick said, "what is everyone talking about Physical Therapy being hard, this is a piece of cake." Little did he realize that was just an evaluation and learned what true physical therapy was all about, YIKES! After the first couple of visits,. it was too painful to watch and brought tears to my eyes, but each session Dick would come away saying, yes I'm a little sore, but in a good way, he was so brave! He'd then show me how far he could move his arm, with a smile and a grimace, but with an extreme sense of positiveness. Actually the team at Farenheit are very careful about 'pain', they would watch Dick's eyes and movement to make sure he wasn't hurting himself but getting the most out of the stretching exercises without hurting. During the summer 3x/week,each session lasting 2 hours, Dick had been faithfully going to Farenheit Physical Therapy where he received excellent one on one treatment. I (Elle) decided to torture myself in the connecting gym but would check in with him each session. We would wave and send thumbs up messages to each other.Lily, Kathy, Marianne (missing from the picture above) and Amy were excellent !! Thank you all at Farenheit for taking such great care of Dick!!
