With the warm weather we've had several sitings of Manatees. Manatees are also known as sea cows and are on the endangered species and protected by the State. They are slow moving mammals that eat sea grass. When we first sited this mammal, we thought he was injured. If you look closely to some of the pictures you can see that the Manatee has some marks on its back. These are possibly due to getting too close to boat props.
Most areas along the ICW have signs telling boaters to slow down due to Manatees. If he was injured, the Wildlife and Fisherie Services would have to be called. However, the dockmaster explained that the animal was just sleeping.The marina is a perfect spot for the Manatee to take a rest because its enclosed and there are not a lot of boats moving in or out of this marina. How many of you can sleep underwater? Believe it or not the Manatee, lifts their snout just enough to take a breath. They barely move and lightly lift their single flipper. This Manatee was approximately 12-13 feet long.
